SUGGESTIONS FOR 2-DAY TOURS IN PIEMONTE

The Mountains

Turin’s mountains have one of the most extensive skiing areas in the Alps, internationally renowned for the quality and quantity of services. Alps of Alta Val Susa, home for Torino 2006 Olympic Games mountain events, offers extensive and modern ski domains, such as Vialattea and Bardonecchia. It is ideal ground for beginners and ski addicts as well as snowboarders.

Piemonte has two national parks: Val Grande and Gran Paradiso, the first national park established in Italy.

Langhe and Roero

Langhe and Roero are renowned for excellent wine and gastronomy including the famous Barolo wine and the white truffle of Alba. The hills are dotted with castles and towers, purveyors of history and art, name in June 2014 a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The tour can start in Grinzane Cavour, where you can visit the medieval Castle and the renovated Langhe Museum, the “Enoteca Regionale Piemontese Cavour,” and the “Sala delle Maschere”, where every year the “World Truffle Auction” takes place.

Not far from here is the charming Barolo, where in late 2010 the WiMu – the Wine Museum created by the famous Swiss architect François Confino – opened its doors. A lesson on the regional viticulture can be arranged, assisted by an expert taster. Complete the experience in La Morra at “Belvedere point” and enjoy a view of the beautiful landscapes, vineyards, medieval villages, castles, and towers.

Worth visiting is the complex “Agenzia di Pollenzo.” While this once belonged to the Savoy family, it now houses the first University of Gastronomic Sciences, created by Slow Food. The tour continues at Alba, known as the “town of the 100 towers,” with its churches and palaces built from the Middle Ages to Art Nouveau period. End the day with an unforgettable meeting with a truffle hunter.

The Lake District

Lake Maggiore, Orta, Mergozzo, and Ossola are all united under the so called Lake District. Lake Maggiore with its light blue waters offers nature, parks, mountains, gardens, islands, flowers, and much more.

The Lake Maggiore has been made famous by the presence of the Borromeo Islands, but it offers other points of interest: splendid villas and gardens created in the 19th and 20th century along the Piemonte shores. Stresa and Verbania are worth a visit to admire the Borromeo Gardens and the botanical gardens of Villa Taranto and Villa San Remigio respectively. The nearby Lake Orta increases the charm of this tourist area. This stretch of water is home to the enchanting Island of San Giulio. From here you can climb up to Valle Strona, famous for its wood crafted products and its brass musical instruments.

A mountain range encloses the lake basin, dominated by the huge Alpine chain of Monte Rosa. Here the hill and mountain villages offer spectacular views and a vast amount of folklore and ancient traditions. Excursions will offer panoramic views of the picturesque valleys facing Lake Maggiore. Among these, we must highlight the Val Grande Nature Park, the most extensive wild area in central Europe.
