WELCOME
A warm welcome from the Organising Committee of the 11th International Symposium on Biomolecular Archaeology! We are delighted and honoured that you chose to vote for ISBA11 to be held in Turin, taking the conference to Italy for the first time.
In our vision, ISBA11 will be a conference where methodological and theoretical advances in biomolecular archaeology will be merged. We welcome submissions covering a wide range of topics, showcasing how biomolecular approaches are developed and applied to reconstruct all aspects of past lives – from individual to ecosystem levels. We particularly encourage presentations addressing how biomolecular data can be integrated into archaeological theoretical frameworks including, among others, niche construction, multi-species, evolutionary, and materiality theories.
The conference sessions will take place across two institutions and venues – the “Aldo Moro” campus at the University of Turin and the Musei Reali, both located in the historical city centre. We hope that discussing the outstanding scientific progress generated by our community in such diverse settings will be inspiring and enriching for all, allowing us to reach out to the wider society.
Themes:
- Methodological advancements in biomolecular archaeology (DNA, proteins, lipids, and metabolites)
- Integrating ancient biomolecules and archeological theory
- Authentication and reliability of ancient molecular datasets
- Ethics and sustainability in sampling and analysis
- Environmental change, sustainability and ancient ecosystems
- Evolution of human and non-human animals, plants, and microbes
- Interactions between human and non-human animals, plants, and microbes
- Migration, mobility, and translocation
- Diet and foodways
- Embodied identities in life and death
- Biomolecular traces of the immaterial world
Special ISBA11 theme: ancient biomolecules and museums
Special panel: “Academic feudalism”: research ethics and sustainability in biomolecular archaeology. This will be a panel discussion on the ethical and sustainable research of cultural heritage for biomolecular analysis, focusing on how the field moves forward by addressing ethical dilemmas from project design to the communication of results.
UPDATE – ABSTRACT REVIEW RESULTS
We received an amazing 480 high quality submissions. Due to time and space constraints, unfortunately not all the submissions for podium presentations could be accepted as talks. However, we hope to see you all at ISBA11 as part of our extensive poster session and flash talk session.
Following an intensive review by our dedicated scientific committee, an email was sent out to convey the acceptance results. You will have been awarded either a talk, poster, or poster & flash talk. The flash talks will be held in a special dedicated session.
For more information on the abstract review results, you can check out the submission portal using the login details you received on abstract submission.
